Pour boiling water down the drain in two to three stages. Follow with a mix of baking soda and white vinegar, wait 15 minutes, then flush with hot water.
If the drain is still slow after two attempts or water backs up completely.
Open the cistern lid and check if the float ball is stuck or sitting too high. Gently bend the float arm downward so the water shuts off at the correct level.
If the flapper valve is worn, the fill valve is noisy, or the toilet still runs after adjusting the float.
Turn off the water supply at the isolator valve under the sink. Tighten the packing nut (the nut below the handle) slightly with an adjustable spanner.
If tightening the packing nut does not stop the drip — the cartridge or O-ring likely needs replacing.
Remove the aerator (the small mesh screen at the tip of the tap) and rinse it under water to clear mineral deposits. Soak in white vinegar for 30 minutes if heavily scaled.
If pressure is low across multiple taps or throughout the whole unit — this points to a pipe or building supply issue.
Check the water level inside the cistern — it should sit about 2.5 cm below the top of the overflow tube. Adjust the float to raise the water level if it is too low.
If the flush handle feels loose, the chain is detached, or the bowl does not clear fully — the flushing mechanism needs professional servicing.
Pour a cup of water into the floor trap to refill the water seal. Add a few drops of enzyme drain cleaner. This stops sewer gases from rising up through a dry trap.
If the smell persists after refilling the trap or you notice bubbling — this may indicate a blocked vent pipe or sewer issue.
